04 Jun 08

FUSION investor, and high profile Kiwi entrepreneur, Peter Maire has been honoured as a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to business.

Maire, 56, founded New Zealand navigation technology company Navman in his garage in 1987 before selling it to marine and leisure products giant Brunswick in 2004 for $108 million. His investment vehicle, Tahia Investments, has seen Maire buy into other high-tech companies including Fusion Electronics, Rakon and Cadmus.

"It's always good to get some recognition for the old business stuff," Maire said.

He has previously been awarded the Trade NZ Supreme Exporter of the Year Award in 2002, the Westpac Hi-Tech Supreme Award for Excellence also in 2002 and was made an Honorary Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Engineers in 2005.

Maire, through Tahia Investments, purchased a 29.7% stake in Fusion Electronics in 2005.
